Gemotions

Rain lashed against the attic window as Clara hauled another box across the dusty floor. Her breath hitched with each movement, a tightness constricting her chest. She sank onto a discarded trunk, the wood groaning beneath her. A thick layer of grime coated everything; the musty scent clung to her clothes and filled her nostrils. She just wanted to be still, to stop. Her gaze fell upon a small, leather-bound book tucked under a pile of moth-eaten blankets. It wasn't a book, but a bundle of papers held together with a faded ribbon.

Inside, she found a letter addressed to her own mother, written when she was a teenager. The words, scrawled in her youthful, ambitious hand, spoke of dreams and expectations. "I will become someone," the letter declared. A bitter laugh escaped her lips. The ache in her back and the throbbing in her temples echoed the disappointment. The life she now led, a dull routine of errands and the humdrum of everyday chores, wasn't what the girl who wrote this letter had envisioned.
